Can You Get Enough Protein From Plants?

YES!

You can absolutely get enough high quality protein from plants.

Protein is made up of amino acids, and all plant foods contain protein. Some excellent sources include:

  • Tempeh, tofu, and seitan

  • Quinoa, edamame, and chickpeas

  • Even potatoes have more protein than you might think!

Contrary to popular belief, most Americans are not protein deficient, but they are often fiber deficient.

According to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), the human body needs roughly 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day, depending on age, gender, and activity level. Plant-based eaters typically get more than enough when consuming a variety of whole foods. Learn more

What about Calcium and Iron?

Eating a variety of plant foods not only provides plenty of protein but also meets your calcium and iron needs:

  • Calcium: Leafy greens like spinach and kale, beans, tofu, almonds, and more

  • Iron: Beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens

Research shows that calcium and iron requirements can be met without dairy or meat, and diets rich in whole plant foods are associated with improved health outcomes and reduced risk of chronic disease.
